A Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist (ROMP) is an expert in the application of radiation to the treatment of cancer. ROMPS may be described as radiation scientists with an extensive knowledge of radiation and how it interacts with the human body. They are employed to ensure the safety and best treatment of all Radiation Oncology patients. They also ensure other staff groups and the public are not affected by the radiation practices of an oncology department.
Our team is involved in research to improve the quality of radiotherapy treatments. Research interests include Monte Carlo simulations for dosimetric verification, Leskell Gamma Knife, radiomics, in-vivo dosimeetry, small field dosimetry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry, and other practical dosimetry technologies. The physics team is also actively involved in multidisciplinary collaborative research.
Training
The department trains radiation oncology medical physicists (ROMP) registrars enrolled in the ACPSEM Training, Education and Accreditation (TEAP) program. The availability of training positions varies with time.
