The Metro South Pain Rehabilitation Centre is an outpatient service located at the Burke Street Centre.
It is a service within the Department of Rehabilitation at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. The interdisciplinary team includes medical (pain medicine, rehabilitation medicine, psychiatry), allied health (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, pharmacy), nursing and administrative staff.
The Pain Rehabilitation Centre offers consultative, time-limited treatment and management advice. The service focusses on providing care to complex persistent pain patients who are willing and able to participate in a rehabilitative, multidisciplinary approach for the management of their pain. We expect patients to take an active role in learning rehabilitation strategies and self-mangement techniques.
Examples of treatment options include:
The Pain Rehabilitation Centre does not provide:
The Pain Rehabilitation Centre does not perform surgery to relieve pain. If surgical options are being sought, GPs are recommended to refer to an appropriate surgical service..
A GP referral is required for all patients to be seen at the service.
Due to the chronic, multidimensional and often complex nature of persistent pain, our clinic has adopted a model of service delivery whereby ongoing liaison with a patient's GP is a requirement for integrated and coordinated care. It is therefore important that a GP is aware of and in agreement with the need for a referral to the Pain Rehabilitation Centre as they will be a vital member of the healthcare team involved in the ongoing care of the patient.
The Pain Rehabilitation Centre provides care to people who live in the Metro South and West Moreton Hospital and Health Service catchments. For alternative locations, refer to the Queensland Health Persistent Pain Management Services.
Clinical Prioritisation Criteria have been developed for Referral to the Pain Rehabilitation Centre.
All referrals to the service must be received via the Metro South Health Central Referral Hub. Please see the Central Referral Hub for specific details on referrals processes.
Please note that following placement onto the waiting list, patients are required to confirm their interest in being seen by service by responding to an 'Opt in' process (completion of pen-paper questionnaire that is sent to the patient's address). Patients who do not respond via the 'Opt in' process are removed from the waiting list.
We offer a GP Hotline service that runs on a Tuesday and a Wednesday whereby GPs can speak directly with a Specialist Pain Medicine Physician for advice. GPs are able to access further details regarding the GP Hotline via the Pain Management Advice section of Brisbane South HealthPathways.
