Emergency Immediate transfer to the Emergency Department

If any of the following are present or suspected, phone 000 to arrange immediate transfer to the emergency department or seek emergent medical advice if in a remote region.

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Ruptured haemorrhagic ovarian cyst
  • Ovarian torsion
  • Acute/severe pelvic pain
  • Acute urinary obstruction
  • Significant or uncontrolled vaginal bleeding
  • Severe infection
  • Abscess intra pelvis or PID
  • Bartholin’s abscess / acute painful enlargement of a Bartholin’s gland/cyst
  • Acute trauma including vulva/vaginal lacerations, haematoma and/or penetrating injuries
  • Post-operative complications within 6 weeks including wound infection, wound breakdown, vaginal bleeding/discharge, retained products of conception post-op, abdominal pain
  • Urinary retention
  • Acute urinary obstruction
  • Any molar pregnancy
  • Inevitable and / or incomplete miscarriage
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum
  • Ascites, secondary to known underlying gynaecological oncology

Metro South does not offer Paediatric Gynaecology services. For children 16 years and under who require a Gynaecology Service, please refer to the Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service or Mater Adolescent Gynaecology

Urgent referrals Arranging urgent review

For Terminations of Pregnancy for women with complex health needs or significant social disadvantage, please phone the Consultant on Call for advice or consideration through Logan or Redland hospital switchboard prior to sending a written referral.
 
To arrange a very urgent outpatient appointment, please phone the relevant hospital’s switchboard and ask to speak to the Registrar of the relevant specialty (Please note: there is no Gynaecology service at Princess Alexandra Hospital)

The following are not routinely provided in a public Gynaecology service.

  • Elective cosmetic surgery e.g. labiaplasty
  • Elective tubal ligation but will be accepted as a category 3, if:
    • patient cannot use/trialled other contraceptive methods
    • patient does not want to pass on any genetic disorders or disabilities
    • indicated for women suffering from medical or obstetric conditions that would contraindicate future pregnancy
  • Routine contraception counselling
  • Routine Implanon/Mirena®/progesterone-releasing IUD insertion for contraception
  • Primary menopausal care
  • Routine cervical screening
  • Postnatal check-up
  • IVF services
  • Reversal of tubal ligation

From 3 December 2018 the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018 ensures a termination of pregnancy is treated as a health issue rather than a criminal issue in Queensland. The Act supports a woman’s right to health and autonomy, provides clarity for health practitioners, and brings Queensland in line with other Australian jurisdictions.

NB. Where available, recommend referral to True Relationships and Reproductive Health (formally known as Family Planning Queensland) or a Women’s Health specialty primary care provider/service.

Notes

  • Please note that where appropriate and where available, the referral may be streamed to an associated public allied health and/or nursing service.  Access to some specific services may include initial assessment and management by associated public allied health and/or nursing, which may either facilitate or negate the need to see the public medical specialist.
  • A change in patient circumstance (such as condition deteriorating, or becoming pregnant) may affect the urgency categorisation and should be communicated as soon as possible.
  • Please indicate in the referral if the patient is unable to access mandatory tests or investigations as they incur a cost or are unavailable locally.

Out of catchment

Metro South Health is responsible for providing public health services to the people who reside within its boundaries. Special consideration is made for patients requiring tertiary care or services that are not provided by their local Hospital and Health Service.  If your patient lives outside the Metro South Health area and you wish to refer them to one of our services, inclusion of information regarding their particular medical and social factors will assist with the triaging of your referral.
