New medical ward 5A opened June 2022

New 26-bed ward

Ward 5A at QEII Hospital offers an additional 26 beds for the hospital.

The project includes a $12.1 million investment by the Queensland Government to deliver the additional beds in a former ward space. This space will be made available by moving administration services to a modular building on the campus including enabling works for the modular building and other transition spaces.

The new ward will mean a greater capacity to manage demand and improved patient flow across Metro South Health hospitals.

What we’re planning

The project includes:

  • Refit of existing infrastructure to re-establish a 26-bed medical ward

Benefits

The new medical ward will:

  • Increase the bed capacity of the hospital to help manage the demand for healthcare services across the South East Queensland.
  • Address demand at QEII Hospital which is seeing an annual increase of 5 to 6 per cent.
  • Improve capacity for patients to be treated closer to home.
  • Take advantage of former infrastructure to return Ward 5A back into a functioning ward within the clinical footprint.

Timelines

  • October 2020: Detailed Business case
  • July 2021: Commence move of administration services and works for Ward 5A
  • May 2022: Practical Completion of Ward 5A
  • June 2022: Opening of Ward 5A

What to expect

The works to accommodate various projects on QEII hospital campus will be visible when attending the campus and will be screened off with clear instructions for accessing clinical areas. We’re making a bit of noise but all services at QEII Hospital will continue to operate as normal during construction.

Our number one priority is to ensure you and your family feel safe and comfortable when you visit us. Please speak to our staff if you have any questions or concerns and we sincerely thank you for your patience while we deliver these improvements for our community.
